Is Mt Lemmon Open? The Honest Answer for Today
Mt. Lemmon does not have a gate you pay at, and there is no such thing as the mountain being closed for the day the way a theme park closes. The Catalina Highway is a public county road. In ordinary weather you can drive up any morning you like, park in Summerhaven, and walk around.
So when someone asks whether Mt. Lemmon is open, they are usually asking one of five different questions, and each one has its own answer. On this page each is separated out, with the source to check it against. That is more useful than a single yes or no, because the most common mistake visitors make is assuming a clear road in the village means a clear road all the way up.
Check Conditions Right Now
The Pima County Sheriff's road condition hotline is a 24-hour recording and it is the number locals call. Road closure pages are updated during business hours; the hotline is what covers nights, weekends and storms:
- Pima County road closure updates - the official closure list and map
- Mt Lemmon road conditions and visitor essentials - chains, fuel, parking and what to pack
- Live Mt Lemmon webcams - what the village looks like right now
- National Weather Service summit forecast - what is about to arrive
One rule of thumb worth remembering: the mountain is at its busiest and its most closed at exactly the same time. On a good snow weekend the sheriff can hold traffic at the base of the highway once Summerhaven parking fills, so an early start is the difference between a snow day and a U-turn.
The Five Things That Actually Close on Mt. Lemmon
None of these is the mountain itself. Each is a specific place or road, and each has its own trigger and its own way to check.
| What closes | When it closes | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| The Catalina Highway | During winter storms, for ice and snow. The sheriff can restrict it to residents and employees only, or close it at the base. | Road hotline (520) 351-3351 |
| The road above Ski Valley | Every winter. The gate past Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley closes for the season, which cuts off the summit area and Mount Lemmon Day Use Area by vehicle. | The same hotline; the Forest Service states the road beyond Ski Valley closes in winter. |
| Forest areas and trails | When a Forest Service closure order is in force, usually for construction, wildlife protection or fire danger. | Coronado National Forest alerts |
| Campgrounds and picnic areas | Seasonally. Many are day-use-only, gated at night or shut for the winter months. | Each site's own Forest Service page |
| Village businesses | By their own seasonal hours, and some close a day or two a week. This is the closure people most often mistake for the whole mountain being shut. | The business's own website or phone |
Two closures are live as of late 2026, and neither is about the road up. The Marshall Gulch area is under Forest Order #03-05-05-26-009: the Arizona Trail, Marshall Gulch Trail #3, Aspen Trail #93 and Sunset Trail #90 are open to pedestrians on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and federal holidays, while Mondays through Thursdays the whole area closes for public safety. Separate orders cover the Bighorn Sheep area and fall camping near Tanque Verde. If you are hiking rather than driving, check the alerts index before you go.
What Is Open on Mt. Lemmon Almost Every Day of the Year
It is worth saying plainly, because the volume of closure talk online makes the mountain sound shut half the time. In an ordinary week, this is what is open:
- The Catalina Highway, all 27.2 miles of it, from the base to Summerhaven and on to Ski Valley. No fee, no reservation, no entrance station.
- Summerhaven itself - the village, the general store, the restaurants, the gift shops and the hotel. This is where the vast majority of visitors actually spend their day.
- The picnic areas and trailheads along the highway, in season and outside any closure order.
- The scenic overlooks, which are pull-outs on the road itself and are open whenever the road is.
- Ski Valley in season, including the Sky Ride when the slopes are not running.
Two practical warnings that catch people out. First, there is no gas station anywhere on the mountain - fill up at the base of the Catalina Highway before you climb. Second, cell service is patchy on the upper mountain, so download what you need and settle your plans before you lose signal rather than at the top.
Is Mt. Lemmon Open in Winter?
Yes, and winter is also the season when the answer changes most often. Catalina Highway sees road restrictions on average about 5 to 15 days per winter, and they are usually temporary while the plows clear the road. The snow line sits around 7,000 ft, so the village at roughly 8,000 ft is where snow actually settles.
| Season | What is normally open | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Mar-May) | Highway, village, most trails. Wildflower season on the lower slopes. | Late-season storms. The upper gate may still be shut into spring. |
| Summer (Jun-Aug) | Everything, including the summit road and the high country. This is peak season and the reason the mountain exists for Tucson. | Monsoon afternoon storms, and fire restrictions. Lightning is a genuine hazard above the treeline. |
| Fall (Sep-Nov) | Highway, village, trails. The aspens turn in October and it gets busy. | First snow can arrive in November, well before winter officially starts. |
| Winter (Dec-Feb) | The highway most days, the village, and Ski Valley when the slopes run. | Storm closures, chain and 4WD requirements, the gate above Ski Valley closing for the season, and full parking lots by mid-morning on snow weekends. |
How to Check Before You Drive Up
Do it in this order on the morning you are going, and it takes two minutes. This is the sequence locals actually use:
- Call (520) 351-3351. This is the sheriff's road condition recording, updated when the status changes. It is the fastest single check and it covers nights and weekends, when the county's web page is not being updated.
- Look at the live webcams. They show the village parking areas and roads. If the ground is white there, the snow line has reached the village. If the lots are packed, expect traffic control at the base.
- Read the summit forecast. A storm that has not arrived yet is the one that catches people on the way down.
- Check Forest Service alerts if you are hiking or camping rather than just driving to the village.
If all four look fine, go. If two of them disagree, believe the hotline over everything else, because it reflects what the deputies have actually done to the road.
What to Do If the Road Is Closed
First, do not drive to the base to find out for yourself. The closure is enforced at the bottom, and on a bad morning there is a line of cars turning around. Second, remember that these closures are usually counted in hours rather than days - the county closes the road while the plows work, then reopens it. A late breakfast in Tucson often turns a closed mountain into an open one.
If you already have a cabin booked with us, text rather than drive. We are on the mountain and we can tell you what the road is doing at the village end, which is information the hotline does not always carry.
Is Mt. Lemmon Open FAQ
Is Mt. Lemmon open today?
Most days, yes. There is no entrance gate and no admission fee, and the Catalina Highway is a public county road. What changes day to day is the road's condition in winter and whether any Forest Service closure order is in force. For today's status, call the road hotline at (520) 351-3351 - it is a 24-hour recording.
Does Mt. Lemmon close in the winter?
The mountain does not close, but parts of it do. The road above Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley is gated shut every winter, which cuts off the summit area and the Mount Lemmon Day Use Area by vehicle. Separately, the Catalina Highway sees road restrictions on about 5 to 15 days each winter while plows clear ice and snow, and during a storm the sheriff can restrict it to residents and employees.
Is there a fee or a gate to drive up Mt. Lemmon?
No. Driving the Catalina Highway is free and there is no entrance station - you turn off Tanque Verde onto the Catalina Highway and climb. Fees apply only at specific day-use sites: the Mount Lemmon Day Use Area is $8 per vehicle per day, or $10 for a weekly pass, and an Interagency pass is accepted there.
Where does the winter gate close on Mt. Lemmon?
At Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley. The Forest Service states that the access road beyond Ski Valley is closed in the winter, so the summit area and the Mount Lemmon Day Use Area become inaccessible by vehicle. Summerhaven sits below that gate, so the village stays reachable whenever the highway itself is open.
Is Mt. Lemmon open when it snows?
Often, but it depends on the storm. Light snow usually means the road stays open with chain or 4WD requirements. Heavier snow brings closures at the base, and on busy snow weekends the sheriff can hold traffic once Summerhaven parking fills. Check the hotline before you leave and again before you start back down.
What should I do if the Catalina Highway is closed?
Wait, or come another day. Closures usually last only while the plows work, so a few hours can make the difference. Check the hotline at (520) 351-3351 for the reopening, and if you already have a cabin booked, text us at (520) 277-2478 rather than driving to the base to ask.
Is Mt. Lemmon closed today?
Almost never as a whole. There is no gate you pay at and no admission charge, and the Catalina Highway is a public county road, so on an ordinary day the answer is no — Mt. Lemmon is not closed. What does close is specific: the road above Ski Valley every winter, individual Forest Service areas under a closure order, and campgrounds outside their season. For today's status, call the road hotline at (520) 351-3351, which is a 24-hour recording.
Where can I find Mt. Lemmon closures today?
Two places, and they cover different things. The Pima County road closure page covers the highway itself, and the Coronado National Forest alerts page covers closures on forest land — trails, picnic areas and campgrounds. Neither one replaces the road hotline at (520) 351-3351 at night or on a weekend, when those websites are not being updated.
Are the restaurants and shops on Mt. Lemmon open?
Mostly yes, and they set their own hours. Summerhaven's General Store, restaurants and shops operate seasonally, and Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley — which has its own restaurant and fudge shop — is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. See our Mt Lemmon dining guide and shops and stores guide, and check the business's own page the morning you drive up, because hours move with the season and the weather.
Are the campgrounds and picnic areas on Mt. Lemmon open?
It depends on the season and the site. Forest campgrounds on the mountain generally run spring through fall, and some close outright in winter. Picnic areas and the Mount Lemmon Day Use Area sit beyond the winter gate, so they become unreachable by vehicle once the road above Ski Valley closes, while picnic spots closer to the village stay open. Marshall Gulch is under a Forest Service closure order through 2026, with its trailhead parking shut and the trails open Friday through Sunday and federal holidays only. Site-by-site status is listed on the Coronado National Forest alerts page, and our Mt Lemmon camping guide covers the campgrounds themselves.
Booked a cabin and wondering about the road?
Mt. Lemmon Hotel keeps 21 private cabins in Summerhaven, 12 of them pet friendly with no pet fee. You are already above the winter gate, so a storm that closes the highway above Ski Valley never touches your stay.
