Mt. Lemmon Travel in the Snow

How to Safely Travel and Plan for Staying in a Cabin on Mt. Lemmon, Arizona with Snow in the Forecast
Mt. Lemmon, nestled in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson, Arizona, is a beloved getaway for desert dwellers looking for a taste of winter. But when snow is in the forecast, it’s essential to plan and prepare thoroughly to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Here’s a complete guide on how to have a safe and snowy cabin stay on Mt. Lemmon and safely travel in the snow.
- Check Weather Conditions and Road Updates Frequently
- On average there are road restrictions 5-15 days per year during the winter. These restrictions are generally temporary while the plows work to clear the road. Before heading out, regularly monitor weather forecasts and road conditions. The road condition phone number is 520-351-3351. Please be flexible if we ask you to head up to your reservation a few hours early. We are doing this with the intent of getting you up into your cabin before the snow arrives. You can check the current weather at www.mtlemmonweather.com
- Ensure Your Vehicle is Winter-Ready
- Tires: If you’re expecting snow or ice make sure your tires have sufficient tread. Chains: If you do not have 4×4 – you can purchase snow chains for cheap on Amazon or at some local auto supply shops. Emergency Kit: Pack an emergency kit with essential winter supplies: a flashlight, blankets, gloves, water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and extra batteries. This can be invaluable in case of delays or road closures. Gas and Fluids: Keep your gas tank at least half full and check all vehicle fluids, particularly antifreeze. Remember, there is not a gas station in Summerhaven. The closest gas station is on Tanque Verde and Bear Canyon near the base.
- Prepare the Right Gear for a Snowy Cabin Stay
- Clothing: Dress in layers, as temperatures can fluctuate significantly in the mountains. Bring insulated, waterproof boots, warm socks, gloves, scarves, and hats. Be sure to pack extras in case clothes get wet from the snow. Snow Play Essentials: If you plan to enjoy the snow, bring items such as sleds, snowshoes, and plenty of warm gear. Snowboarding and skiing are popular on Mt. Lemmon’s Ski Valley, but you’ll need to rent equipment either before arrival or at the mountain’s limited facilities. Gloves, hats, beanies, sweaters, jackets, hand and feet warmer and other basics can be purchased at the Mt. Lemmon General Store. Indoor Activities: Cabin stays in snow-prone areas sometimes involve being “snowed in,” so bring books, board games, and any other activities you enjoy for cozy downtime.
- Stock Up on Groceries and Essentials Before Arrival
- Because Mt. Lemmon is a remote area with limited grocery options, it’s best to buy groceries, water, and any supplies you’ll need before heading up. Plan meals ahead, and don’t forget hot drinks like cocoa or tea to enjoy while watching the snowfall. The Mt. Lemmon General Store carries basic grocery supplies if there is anything that you may have forgotten. There are a variety of restaurants and shops in Summerhaven and at Ski Valley which is about 1.7 miles away. Each of our cabins include a microwave, fridge/freezer and stove to prepare your meals.
- Arrive and Depart During Daylight
- Navigating snowy roads on Mt. Lemmon is much easier and safer during daylight hours. Plan to arrive and leave during the day to maximize visibility and ensure road conditions are safe. If you must drive during the night or times of low visibility, drive slowly and take turns cautiously.
- Be Mindful of Wildlife
- While it might be tempting to leave trash outside to pick-up another time, this is a private invitation for wildlife to come near.
- Leave No Trace
- Mt. Lemmon is known for its natural beauty, so be respectful of the environment. Collect and properly dispose of all waste, do not leave your broken sleds or trash. Mt. Lemmon does not have a public trash service. We appreciate you taking it home with you!
