Why Mt. Lemmon Is Dog Paradise

30°F Cooler in Summer

When Tucson bakes at 105°F, Summerhaven (about 8,000 ft) sits at a crisp 75-85°F. Pavement and trails stay cool enough for paws — no midday heat danger like the desert floor.

Real Snow in Winter

Most dogs have never seen snow. At 8,000 feet, winter storms bring snow play, sledding and cold-weather cabin coziness — our concrete and asphalt roads are plowed all season.

Miles of Forest to Roam

Dogs are allowed throughout the Coronado National Forest on Mt. Lemmon, with miles of pine and aspen trails right outside our door — and the 9,171-foot summit is a short drive up the highway.

Real guests, real cabins — dogs are truly welcome here.

The short answer

Yes — dogs are welcome at Mt. Lemmon Hotel. Twelve of our 21 private cabins are pet friendly, with no pet fee and up to 3 pets per cabin (any breed; cats welcome too). There is a fenced dog park on site, and dogs are allowed on the forest trails around Summerhaven.

The only places dogs are not allowed are the Pusch Ridge Wilderness bighorn sheep closure area and the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area at the bottom of the mountain.

The Rules (So You Never Get a Citation)

These are the current Coronado National Forest rules for the Santa Catalina Ranger District, straight from the Forest Service. Share them with anyone bringing a dog.

Leash rules: when on, when off

Dogs may be off leash in the forest outside developed recreation areas (as long as your dog is not vicious and not a female in heat). But dogs must be on a leash at all developed recreation sites — picnic areas, campgrounds, day-use areas and around facilities like Rose Canyon Lake and the Ski Valley day-use area. When in doubt near people, leash up. Violations are citable under 36 CFR 261.16(j) and 261.8(d).

Poop bags: required by federal law

Yes — picking up after your dog is federal law on the Coronado (36 CFR 261.11). Carry bags on every walk; most trailheads stock free doggy bags. Do not leave a bag on the trail "for the way back" — the Forest Service explicitly asks you to pack it out.

Where dogs are NOT allowed

Two places nearby: the Pusch Ridge Wilderness bighorn sheep closure area (lower west side of the Catalinas) and the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area (the bottom of the mountain). Everything else on Mt. Lemmon proper — including all the trails below — is dog friendly.

Never leave a dog in the car

Even at 8,000 feet, a closed car heats up fast and can kill a pet in minutes. If you are eating at a restaurant or shopping in Summerhaven, leave someone with the dog or take turns going inside — and ask us about pet-sitting options.

Wildlife & food

Deer, javelina and the occasional black bear live here. Keep your dog close on early-morning and dusk walks, and never leave pet food outside — secure all food in your cabin or vehicle to avoid attracting wildlife.

Water & altitude

Always carry fresh water for your dog. Streams look inviting, but stagnant water can harbor bacteria — don't let your dog drink it. Summerhaven sits at about 8,000 feet and the summit at 9,171 feet, so watch for labored breathing on longer hikes and take it easy the first day.

Trail note for Mt. Lemmon

Snow lingers on high trails into late spring, and monsoon storms roll in most summer afternoons — hike early, carry water for both of you, and check the Mt. Lemmon weather page before you head out. Gate closures can limit upper-mountain access in winter — call the road hotline (520) 351-3351, or see our road conditions guide.

Where to Eat in Summerhaven With Your Dog

This is the question guests ask us most, and the answer is straightforward: patios, plus your own cabin kitchen.

Sawmill Run Restaurant

Our go-to recommendation: 12976 N Sabino Canyon Pkwy, (520) 576-9147. Burgers, smoked brisket, trout and ribs, with a dog-friendly patio that is a local favorite. Typically open Friday through Sunday — check hours before you go.

Ski Valley & the Iron Door

Leashed, friendly dogs are welcome on the Ski Valley grounds (they are invited to Oktoberfest every fall), but the Iron Door Restaurant allows only service animals inside. Plan a takeout-and-patio meal instead.

Cookie Cabin & General Store

Both in the village for giant cookies, fudge, pizza and groceries. Grab it to go and eat back at your cabin — every pet-friendly cabin has a full kitchen and a porch.

Always ask before bringing your dog onto any patio, and keep them leashed in the village. For the full lineup of mountain food, see our Mt. Lemmon dining guide.

Winter With Your Dog

Snow changes the rules a little, and it is the highlight of the year for most visiting dogs.

Paws & Cold

Ice balls form between paw pads in deep snow. Booties or a towel-down at the door help, and check paws after every walk. Never leave a dog outside a cabin unattended in winter.

Snow Play Is Dog Heaven

The dog park and the fields around the cabins are fenced or open and great for zoomies. Most dogs get their first-ever snow experience right here — bring a towel and a camera.

Getting Up the Mountain

The highway is plowed in most conditions, but chain restrictions happen on average 5 to 15 days each winter. Call the road hotline (520) 351-3351 before you drive up with your dog.

Our 12 Pet-Friendly Cabins

Every pet cabin includes a full kitchen, DIRECTV, high-speed Wi-Fi, dog bowls, and a fenced yard or gated deck. Bring up to 3 dogs — any breed — plus cats with a litter box. No pet fee, ever.

The On-Site Dog Park

Let your dog burn off zoomies in our fenced dog park, located between the Arizona Cabin and the wedding venue. It is free for guests and a favorite stop before the drive home. Leash required outside the park, including in the cabin village.
